LED, or Induction, which is best?
Why argue? Both are great light sources, the question is, what do you want to illuminate? Doelcher Lighting Innovations will team with you to help you decide. DLI offers the highest quality products for both technologies, LED and Induction lighting will save about the same amount of energy, each has advantages and disadvantages, here are a few;
- Longevity; LED’s are rated around 50,000hrs, Induction 100,000hrs.
- Cost; LED’s are becoming more affordable, so cost is comparable.
- Color Rendering and Spectrum; Induction is 80+, LED’s 70+, LED’s have the large blue spectrum that affects sleep patterns, Induction does not.
- Glare; LED’s without diffusion can be very glary, Induction is not glary!
- Fixture Height; Induction does not do well over 30’ while LED performs much better.
- Fixture Size; Induction fixtures will be much larger than a comparable LED fixture
- Lumens per Watt; LED’s are achieving 100-130lm/w, while Induction remains around 80+. Although LED’s that are diffused in any way deliver far less lm/w than claimed by manufacturers.
- Directionality; LED’s can be aimed to illuminate areas; Induction is good for lighting large areas, without control!
- Temperature; Induction outperforms LED’s in areas of high heat, although heat is the enemy for all electronics. LED’s will light faster in cold than Induction.
- Shadows; LED’s are a point source light, so they will create dark shadows with obstructions, such as columns or foliage. Induction is a linear light source; shadows will be reduced and much less defined.
- Mercury Content; LED’s have no mercury, Induction contains a small pellet of amalgam mercury (solid) like tooth fillings, not hazardous; all electronics require special disposal, because of heavy metals used!
